How screen size is measured

Screen size is always the diagonal measurement from one corner to the opposite corner. A 27-inch monitor is not 27 inches wide. The actual width depends on the aspect ratio.

A 27-inch 16:9 monitor is about 23.5 inches wide and 13.2 inches tall. A 34-inch 21:9 ultrawide is about 31.5 inches wide but only 13.3 inches tall.

Common aspect ratios

16:9: The standard for most monitors, TVs, and laptops. Nearly all content is designed for this ratio.

16:10: Slightly taller than 16:9. Popular in productivity laptops (like MacBooks). The extra vertical space is helpful for documents and code.

21:9 (Ultrawide): About 33% wider than 16:9. Great for multitasking, cinema-format movies, and immersive gaming. Some apps and games may not support it natively.

32:9 (Super Ultrawide): Equivalent to two 16:9 monitors side by side. Niche but useful for replacing dual monitor setups.

Size recommendations by use case

Office work and general use: 24 to 27 inches at 16:9 or 16:10. Easy to see everything without head movement.

Content creation and programming: 27 to 32 inches at 16:9, or 34 inches ultrawide. More screen real estate for timelines, code editors, and reference materials.

Gaming: 27 inches at 1440p is the current sweet spot. 34-inch ultrawide for immersive RPGs. Competitive FPS players often prefer 24 to 25 inches for quicker eye scanning.

Movie watching: 34-inch ultrawide eliminates black bars on most movies filmed in 2.35:1 or 2.39:1. For 16:9 TVs, bigger is generally better for film viewing.

What about curved screens?

Curved screens (1000R, 1500R, 1800R) are designed to match the natural curvature of human vision. The number represents the radius in millimeters. 1000R is more aggressively curved than 1800R.

Curved screens work best on larger displays (27 inches and above) and ultrawide formats. On smaller screens, the curve is unnecessary and can distort straight lines for content creation work.
